The New Jersey State Supreme Court handed down a sentence yesterday against Nicholas Drakos, 48, for hosting a casino gambling online site from his Belleville, N.J. home.

Police officers arrested Drakos after many months of undercover operations. To begin with, an undercover police officer signed up for an account at Drakos’ casino gambling online site. Next, another undercover officer met with Drakos in order to sign up for his website’s advertising affiliate program.

The casino gambling online site owner was arrested on April 1^st at Newark Liberty International Airport carrying over $1,500 in cash, plus the records for his website, and charged with promoting gambling and money laundering.

Drakos’ defense attorney, Robert Dunn, argued that there is no law in New Jersey that makes casino gambling online illegal. He maintained that the absence of specific legislation against owning and operating a casino gambling online site explained and excused his client’s ignorance of the law.

Even the judge, although he did not dismiss any of the claims against Drakos, acknowledged that it will be difficult to prove that the defendant “promoted” gambling by hosting a an internet casino gambling site.
