31-year-old-man was killed during an orchestrated robbery during a craps game in Oakland.
For several months, Fritz Paige was participating in a high stakes craps game, somewhere in a quiet park close to Kaiser Hospital. After playing for quite a while, the pot got as high as $20,000. From the very beginning, Paige planned to rob the craps game, but he first wanted to higher the pot. This is why he kept playing.
Homicide Sgt. Tony Jones stated Tuesday that Paige is a 24-year-old convicted marijuana dealer, who doesn’t have any regrets for his action. According to Paige, somebody was bound to rob the craps game eventually and he figured it just as well could be him. Jones claims that Paige has admitted his involvement in the shooting.
According to Jones, Paige and the other players chose to play their craps game at tiny Oak Park in the 3200 block of Kempton Avenue because they considered it private, relatively safe and not often patrolled by police.
The plan of Paige was to make him look like a victim. This is why he hired someone else to do the heist. He waited until the pot was high enough and then he called his accomplice. Under questioning by Jones and Sgt. Lou Cruz, Paige first tried to blame the robbery of the craps game on other people. Unfortunately, this didn’t work out so well, since one of the men he tried to blame was in San Quentin state prison at the time of the killing on a parole violation.
One of the players of the craps game was Michael Doss, a car salesman and father of 3 kids. Doss was killed during the heist, shot by the accomplice of Paige. When the guy came up with a gun and started to yell commands, Doss made a sudden move, scaring the gunman, who immediately shot him. At this moment, all the players and the gunmen fled the scene.
Jones stated to the press that evidence was found at the scene that proved that Paige was involved in the crime, and the police brought him in for him for questioning.
Paige was charged for robbery and murder on January 10. Up until now, no one else has been charged in the case. This week, Paige is scheduled to be in Alameda County Superior Court.
